Greenwich, London
2nd March to 1st December 2024
Over a year in the making, I’m very pleased to announce that Royal Museums Greenwich will be displaying 42 prints and two original glass plates from the project in a major exhibition at the National Maritime Museum to coincide with the RNLI’s 200th anniversary.
The exhibition is called Women of the RNLI and will run from 2nd March to 1st December 2024 — look out for the commemorative postcard pack in the Museum shop too!
I feel the NMM has always been a natural and obvious home for my work, so it was a very special moment when the Museum got in touch to say they’d like to acquire prints of my photographs for their archive.
It really is an honour to know that my photographs are now sitting alongside some of the great artworks and artefacts from our maritime heritage, and I’m sure the extraordinary people within the photographs will feel similarly.
After all, I couldn’t have made this work without them, so it feels like the ultimate reward for all involved — to have such a bright light shone on this aspect of maritime culture, a vital slice of island life that can be taken for granted all too often until moments like this, moments when we are reminded of the greatness of humanity continually on display from the brave, selfless folk of the RNLI.

5pm, Tuesday 15th February 2022
Earlier this month, I received some good news from the National Library of Wales where 26 of my prints are held in the National Collection of Welsh Photographs:
Two of my photographs are to be shown at their satellite gallery, Riverside in Haverfordwest, in a pair of exhibitions which open today, Saturday 18th September.
My portrait of the Tenby RNLI crew (a print of which has also been purchased by Martin Parr for the Martin Parr Foundation) is being shown in an exhibition titled ‘People: Photographs from the National Collection’ and will feature alongside images from other photographers such as David Hurn and Philip Jones Griffiths celebrating the art of documentary photography and the lives of ordinary people.
The second photogaph will be shown in the other half of the same gallery in a semi permanent exhibition ‘Pembrokeshire: Then & Now’ which will showcase a small number of items from across the Library’s vast collections (paintings, photographs, manuscripts and archives) based on the theme of Pembrokeshire. The NLW have chosen ‘St Davids RNLI Old and New Boathouses’ to feature in this display.

Founded in London in 1853, The Royal Photographic Society is one of the oldest photographic societies around. Roger Fenton was the driving force behind its formation, the famous wet collodion pioneer who became the Society’s first secretary.
Fenton’s one of my few photographic heroes. If there’s one person in early photographic history who I could join for a blether over a pint, it would be him! I always mention Fenton — and his assistant Marcus Sparling — in my talks and I now have the opportunity to give an online presentation to the members of the Royal Photographic Society on 10th February 2022.

A film celebrating RNLI communities across Scotland
Live in-person post-screening blether with Shona Thomson (Producer/Director), Rhona Meikle (North Berwick RNLI crew) and Jack Lowe (The Lifeboat Station Project)
Wednesday 10th November 2021 from 6:30pm
Seventeen portraits and two audio recordings from the project have been incorporated into Launch!, a cinema release of archive film and video celebrating RNLI communities across Scotland.
Directed by Shona Thomson in a co-production with Screen Argyll, the 44 minute film is a wondrous and deeply moving experience. As you can imagine, I’m so proud that my work is seen as a fitting way to join the dots between the present and the past.
Launch! premiered at Mareel in Lerwick, Shetland on 20th June 2021 and it’s now touring cinemas across Scotland throughout the Autumn and Winter of 2021.
Cinemas screening the film are collaborating with local RNLI stations to celebrate the important work of their volunteers. Each event is different so look out for special extras like additional films of your local lifeboat, or an in-person discussion afterwards with RNLI crew, or a pre-recorded blether with the folk involved in making the film.

WITH COURAGE EXHIBITION: Giant Poster
Maritime Heritage Centre, Stiffkey, North Norfolk
26th to 29th April 2021
Rescue Wooden Boats loved the first poster we made so much that they’ve asked us to install a fresh one ready for the Spring!
So, we’re returning to North Norfolk between Monday 26th and Thursday 29th April 2021 to paste a new giant poster of Lucy Lavers on the gable end of the Maritime Heritage Centre in Stiffkey (2020 installation pictured).
Measuring 8 metres wide and comprised of 35 sheets, this is part of the With Courage Exhibition — my plan to make a collection of giant outdoor posters around the country showcasing the glass plate photographs from The Lifeboat Station Project.
If you’d like to seek out my Lucy Lavers poster for yourself, the what3words address will be:
///housework.ordinary.proofs
…and the perfect square to stand in for viewing will be:
///member.hindered.blog
Visit on a Sunday from 23rd May and you can enjoy the Rescue Wooden Boats museum too!
