I’ll share some of the stories along the way and describe how I use wet collodion photography as an essential part of the project, enabling the RNLI lifeboat volunteers to feel involved when visiting the stations as well as engaging my ever-growing band of online supporters.

Earlier this month, I received some good news from the National Library of Wales where 26 of my prints are held in the National Collection of Welsh Photographs
Two of my photographs are to be shown at their satellite gallery, Riverside
My portrait of the Tenby RNLI crew (a print of which has also been purchased by Martin Parr
The second photogaph will be shown in the other half of the same gallery in a semi permanent exhibition ‘Pembrokeshire: Then & Now’ which will showcase a small number of items from across the Library’s vast collections (paintings, photographs, manuscripts and archives) based on the theme of Pembrokeshire. The NLW have chosen ‘St Davids RNLI Old and New Boathouses’ to feature in this display.

Founded in London in 1853, The Royal Photographic Society is one of the oldest photographic societies around. Roger Fenton was the driving force behind its formation, the famous wet collodion pioneer who became the Society’s first secretary.
Fenton’s one of my few photographic heroes. If there’s one person in early photographic history who I could join for a blether over a pint, it would be him! I always mention Fenton — and his assistant Marcus Sparling — in my talks and I now have the opportunity to give an online presentation to the members of the Royal Photographic Society on 10th February 2022.

A film celebrating RNLI communities across Scotland
Live in-person post-screening blether with Shona Thomson (Producer/Director), Rhona Meikle (North Berwick RNLI crew) and Jack Lowe (The Lifeboat Station Project)

Seventeen portraits and two audio recordings from the project have been incorporated into Launch!
Directed by Shona Thomson Screen Argyll
Launch! premiered at Mareel in Lerwick, Shetland on 20th June 2021 and it’s now touring cinemas across Scotland throughout the Autumn and Winter of 2021.
Cinemas screening the film are collaborating with local RNLI stations to celebrate the important work of their volunteers. Each event is different so look out for special extras like additional films of your local lifeboat, or an in-person discussion afterwards with RNLI crew, or a pre-recorded blether with the folk involved in making the film.

Maritime Heritage Centre, Stiffkey, North Norfolk

Rescue Wooden Boats
So, we’re returning to North Norfolk between Monday 26th and Thursday 29th April 2021 to paste a new giant poster of Lucy Lavers on the gable end of the Maritime Heritage Centre in Stiffkey (2020 installation pictured).
Measuring 8 metres wide and comprised of 35 sheets, this is part of the With Courage Exhibition — my plan to make a collection of giant outdoor posters around the country showcasing the glass plate photographs from The Lifeboat Station Project.

The work will be shown alongside glass plate images of current lifeboat stations and crew by photographer Jack Lowe, creator of The Lifeboat Station Project .

Jack will be giving a talk from 1-2pm about The Lifeboat Station Project hosted by The National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth on Wednesday 6th March 2019.
This free talk is open to all. It will also be a final chance to see the exhibition of Jack’s photographs depicting the Welsh RNLI lifeboat volunteers.

Jack will be giving a talk from 2pm about The Lifeboat Station Project as part of an all-day event hosted by the Yorkshire Monochrome Group on Sunday 13th January 2019.
Members of the public are welcome to attend Jack’s talk from 2pm with a fee of £5 payable on entry .
If you’d like to attend for the full day from 10-4, you must book a place via the Yorkshire Monochrome Group website at a cost of £15, which includes a hearty lunch!
